Andrew McPhail

Andrew McPhail is a Canadian visual artist. He was born in Calgary, Alberta, in 1961 and studied at York University where he received his MFA in 1987. Living in Toronto in the 1980′s and 90′s his work focused primarily on drawing, often with pencil crayon on a polyester film called mylar. After moving to Hamilton in 2005, his practice shifted towards three dimensional work, performance and painting.

His accumulative, craft oriented work reconfigures disposable materials such as band aids, Kleenex and pins into large sculpture and installations. in 2013 he was awarded the Canada Council International Residency in Paris, France.

Leslie Furness

Leslie recently graduated with an Honor’s Degree in Art from McMaster University, 2012. She has just completed a Bachelors Degree in Education from Brock University. She will now add Art and English teacher to her roster of accomplishments. Leslie survived a 25-year career painting scenery for the theatre industry, prior to this recent education, starting with a Diploma from Niagara College in Technical Theatre. Leslie is the owner/operator of a mural and faux-finish painting business, Red Brush Studio for Design and Art and continues to create one of a kind finishes and artwork for commercial and residential clients in Niagara, Hamilton and the GTA.

Growing out of her studies at McMaster, Leslie incorporates her love of the theatre with narratives describing the human condition dealing with memory, or loss of it, decay and reinvention. In her current art practice Leslie employs the use of ceramics, media, text, paint, fabric and storytelling to invite the viewer into her dystopic worlds. Leslie is thrilled and honored to be showing alongside of Andrew McPhail in this show that is representative of sculpture, repetition and the human narrative.

We are inviting artists to create one work to be sold during our fundraiser art party.  Your work will be available for purchase for $100 each, with 100% or 50% of the proceeds donated back into the Inc. Please consider making a work and help the         Hamilton Artists Inc. grow our Programming! 

How it works:
- Create one work 1 square foot in size. Come pick up your 1/4 inch thick “smooth one side” pre-cut plywood panel at the Inc.now!
- There are no designated themes or restrictions regarding medium and style.
- Drop off finished works along with a completed and signed submission form at the Inc. between Saturday May 4th and Saturday May 11th. (Submission forms may be picked up at the gallery or downloaded here.)
- Artwork will be open to the public Friday May 17th and Saturday May 18th, with the Fundraiser Art Party to follow that evening at 7pm.

Pictorial and graphic experiments are currently the concentration of Michel Boulanger’s practice. Through 3D works he manipulates and transforms objects by adjusting angles and lighting in order to create different textural compositions. Control Fields consists of a video installation of looped animated images. It is concerned with territorial problems in agriculture.  Which examines the overwhelming pig population verses human and the contrast between growing corn and pig farming which are common in rural Quebec.  The viewer is given a sense of mystery by exploring the never ending play between these concerns.

Michel Boulanger was born in Montagny, Quebec and is currently living in Montreal. In 1992 he received a Masters degree in Fine arts at the University of Quebec a Montreal, where he is currently professor at the visual and media arts department. He has been involved in various solo and group exhibitions across Canada and internationally. Previously he has exhibited at Musée d’art Contemporain of Montreal, B-312 gallery, l’Oeil de Poisson and Axe Neo-7 in Quebec; Neutral Ground, in Saskatchewan; Galerie Sans Nom in New Brunswick. Recently,he was involved in the VideoFormes film festival in France, O:4W festival, Cardiff, in United Kingdom and Kasseler Docfest, in Kassel, Germany. His paintings, drawings and animated films are now in many private and public collections. Boulanger is also amongst the foundings member of B-312 Gallery.  He has received various grants from the Canada Art Council and the Fonds québécois de la recherche sur la société et la culture from the Government of Quebec.
