Professional Development Workshops

Hamilton Artists Inc. presents professional development workshops for artists in the regional arts community. All workshops are free of charge for our members, but donations are always welcome to support our programming and daily operations of the gallery. 2022 Workshops

SketchUp for Artists Workshop, facilitated by Holly Chang. The Hamilton Artists Inc. is partnering with Trinity Square Video to bring a unique professional development workshop for artists and curators. Learn all about SketchUp and how to utilize this free program to help produce 3D layouts for calls for submissions with our amazing facilitator Holly Chang! For artists and curators, SketchUp offers a unique and streamlined way to professionalize their exhibition pitches to galleries or artist space. This workshop will take place online on Zoom on Thursday November 24 from 7:00-900pm.

Demystifying Artist Residencies with Tara Bursey. Please Join us for a Demystifying Artist Residencies Workshop led by long-time local art worker, Tara Bursey. In this workshop, Tara will discuss the types of residency opportunities available to artists, where to learn about them, tips for crafting an appealing proposal, and how to set yourself up for a rewarding time in the studio, and in community. Importantly, Tara will discuss the logistics of carving the time out of your life to be an Artist-in-Residence—a difficult thing for working artists with day jobs, partners and caregiving duties to navigate.

2020 Workshops

Financials for Artists – Navigating the Tax System Workshop by Sunny Widerman, tax preparer and advisor of Personal Tax Advisors. This workshop covered basic tax filing tips targeted towards creative professionals, artists and freelancers. Topics included tips for organizing one’s records, how HST and GST impacts artists, what can be claimed as a business expense, and how use registered retirement savings plan (RRSPs). It took place on Saturday, March 14, 2020, from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm.

2019 Workshops

Art Documentation Session Facilitated by Jackson Klie presented in partnership with Factory Media Centre. This hands-on art documentation workshop taught our members how to take photographs to document their individual artworks or exhibitions. This workshop was presented on Saturday, September 21, 2019, from 2:30 – 5:30 pm. To view the workshop notes please click here.

Grant Info Session led by Andrea Carvalho of the City Of Hamilton (City Enrichment Fund). This session highlighted eligibility, applying online, budget details and general tips on preparing a strong grant application for the arts creation and presentation funding stream available to artists. This event took place on Wednesday, October 2, 2019, from 7:00 – 8:00 pm.

Writer’s Craft Workshop for Artists facilitated by Stephanie Vegh. This session outlined the practical steps for preparing an artist statement and exhibition proposal and took place on Wednesday, October 2, 2019, from 8:00 – 9:00 pm: Writer’s Craft Workshop for Artists facilitated by Stephanie Vegh. 2018 Workshops

Crit Night with Claire Bartleman. This event was an opportunity to share one’s artwork, receive and offer feedback, and learn how to self-critique and meet other artists in your community in a relaxed and supportive environment. This session took place on Wednesday, January 17, 2018, from 7:00 – 9:00 pm.

Space Rentals Workshop Series presented by ArtsBuild Ontario in partnership with Work In Culture: Space Rentals for Beginners & Best Practices for Managing Risk in Space Rentals. These workshops took place on Thursday, January 25, 2018.

Free Proposal Writing Workshop led by Geneviève Wallen, Programming Coordinator at Xpace Cultural Centre. This workshop reviewed how proposals should be written, and covered how to compose a strong artist statement, a developed project description, and thorough support material. This workshop took place on Wednesday, November 21, 2018 from 6:30 – 8:30 pm.

2017 Workshops

The Problem of Diversity in Hamilton presented by NEW Commitee in partnership with Factory Media Centre, led by Sophie Le-Phat Ho, Outreach Coordinator of Articule (Montreal). This program took place on Saturday July 15, 2017, from 1:00 – 5:00 pm.

Grant Strategies for Artists & Creative Entrepreneurs in partnership with Hamilton Arts CouncilThis workshop took place on Thursday, August 24, 2017, from 7:00 – 8:00 pm.

Exhibition and Grant Proposal Workshop with Jon Lockyer. During the workshop Jon discussed what is needed to compose a strong application package, and addressed specific questions, provided tips on how a grant should be written, by highlighting things like storytelling, audience, history, and documentation. 2016 Workshops

Ontario Arts Council Grants Workshop for Visual Artists presented by Zhe Gu of OAC, presented in partnership with Hamilton Arts Council Visual Arts Committee. This session took place on Thursday, November 2, 2016, from 7:00 – 8:00 pm.
