UNSTUCK: Collaging to Awaken the Mind is a workshop series designed to motivate creation through the simple act of sharing images, ideas, and stories. We will gather each class to work through creative, social, and emotional blocks through various methods of collaging, initiated by open-forum conversation. Participants are encouraged to bring photos and/or clippings they feel drawn to or compelled to use. Additional materials will also be supplied.
The workshops are intended for adults (ages 16 and up). No prior experience is necessary. Participants may attend all three sessions, or just one.
Free admission, no registration required.
Stylo Starr is a visual alchemist, known primarily for her multi-layered collage work, which has been featured on large public installations, international publications and apparel. Starr’s visual investigations surround predominantly BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, people of colour) and their relationship to the basic principles and elements of design, while reaffirming their agency as revered subjects of art history.
Evelyn Myrie writes: “For Starr, her work is a practice in revolutionary love, rejecting the lingering effects of white supremacist ideology.”
Stylo has been featured at the Art Gallery of Hamilton alongside the works of Andy Warhol in 2017, and recently completed a residency with the Cotton Factory continuing her explorations in collage and multimedia arts.
This program is part of Hamilton Artists Inc.'s special projects stream, implemented by the NEW Committee. Special Projects are activities that do not take the form of regular exhibitions. They can be one-off performances, zines, posters, screenings, workshops, community events, digital platforms, outdoor projects in our courtyard, site-specific interventions, off-site projects, or other similarly unique initiatives.
