Just what is the status of the Media Arts in Canada today?
What are the issues challenging Canadian media artists?
The “Boxes” symposium is a discussion on the status of Media Arts in Canada involving six media artists and the audience.
The term “Black Box” is used to represent more traditional methods of presenting media arts such as a cinema.
The “White Box” represents the galleries whether artist run, public or commercial galleries. Video and Sound Installations might be part of this section.
The “Small Box” represents all media arts that are more etherial such as the internet and youtube.
The “No Box” represents media arts that seems difficult to categorize such as is used in Performance Art.
There will be several activities that lead up to this symposium.
The speakers are:
Deanna Bowen, video artist and interdisciplinary installations
Carl Brown, experimental film artist and photographer
Jubal Brown, video artist and multi media
Jess Dobkins, performance artist using video
Bruce Elder, experimental 16 mm filmmaker, writer and critic
John Porter, 8(mm) filmmaker and performance artist
