Hamilton Artists Inc is pleased to announce the performance-installation, HERE, by Berenicci Hershorn. The exhibition will be accompanied by a substantial publication surveying Hershorn's extensive and seminal performance practice in addition to reflecting on the current exhibition. The catalogue, featuring contributions from Paul Couillard, Elizabeth Chitty, Andrew James Paterson and Shannon Cochrane is timely in that it reiterates Hershorn's invaluable contributions to the the history of performance art in Canada on the cusp of her being bestowed with the prestigious title of Éminence Grise at this year's 7a*11d International Festival of Performance Art. The opening reception and publication launch will take place on July 10, 7:00 – 9:30pm at Hamilton Artists Inc.
The performative aspect of the installation will take place Friday July 11, 7:00-11:00pm during Hamilton’s Art Crawl.
HERE is a performance-installation using sound, light and atmosphere to create an evocative dreamscape that appeals to all the senses.
HERE, with a few simple objects - watering cans, some plastic tarp, old newspapers - performers execute a simple action attempting to capture and hold a bright red liquid that can not be contained.
HERE, in the echoey quiet between animations, packages piled upon the tables exude their damp into the surrounding air.
HERE marks an extension of Hershorn’s practice as she choreographs a durational performance using performers from both Hamilton and Toronto. This performance and installation is also unique in that it is one of the first times that Hershorn’s performances will continue on as an installation in the gallery space. The documentation of the performance will be projected into the resulting installation for the duration of the exhibition, creating an ephemeral apparition of the performance that was.
Berenicci Hershorn is a Toronto based artist who has, in both solo and collaborative works, produced a unique body of site-specific art over a period spanning more than 40 years. The work, informed by research applied tangentially, incorporates performance, video, sculpture and installation. It includes various public art commissions as well as an extensive history of recognition in art venues around the world.
Hamilton Artists Inc. would like to thank the Canada Council for the Arts for their generous support in mounting this exhibition and publication.
